The story of Joann Helfrich and her boyfriend, Fred McClure is the subject of Oxygen's Snapped show, season 12, episode 9. Oxygen describes the show as: Joann Helfrich is accused of shooting her boyfriend in her apartment in October 2010 but claims she thought she was shooting an intruder..

Helfrich attempted to enter a negotiated guilty plea to murder of the third degree, in exchange for a sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison, plus costs and restitution. However, the trial court did not accept the plea. The case proceeded to a jury trial, after which Helfrich was convicted of murder of the first degree.

Joann Helfrich was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life.
