This case is a tale of two opposing narratives: one of a battered woman killing her abusive husband in self-defense, and another of premeditated murder. Petitioner’s husband, Robert Seaman,was discovered by police officers responding to a missing person report on May12, 2004. Mr.Seaman’s body was hidden in the trunk of Petitioner’s car, which was parked in the driveway of the couple’s home in Farmington Hills, Michigan.  Mr. Seaman had been struck on the head and neck with a hatchet at least sixteen times, slashed with a knife on the neck, stabbed at least twenty-one times, and struck on the forehead with an unidentified blunt object.
